Client Testimonials
  • “When I first got HIV, I felt like my life was over. Food Outreach changed all that. They treat me like a friend, and help me take care of myself.  I eat more fruit now.  The mandarin oranges are awesome.”  (17 years old, HIV/AIDS client)
  • “Food Outreach has had a life-altering effect on me.  I now look forward to getting up in the morning, I feel like people really do care about me and my health.” (61 years old, HIV/AIDS client)
  • “I was diagnosed with cancer, and my world was shattered.  At one point I had to go to hotels looking for ‘free’ continental breakfasts. My prayer for food was answered when the Siteman Cancer Center referred me to Food Outreach.”  (42 years old, Cancer client)
  • “I don’t know where I would be or if I ‘would be’ if I hadn’t made that first phone call to Food Outreach.  Since then I have never been without food.”  (58 years old, Cancer client)
Nutrition Education and Counseling
Food Outreach has a Registered Dietitian available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and by appointment. The Dietitian can assess and personalize an eating plan so clients can feel better and stay healthy.  These plans take into account drug treatments.  In addition, the Dietitian can track body weight, muscle and fat content. Food Outreach uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), a noninvasive tool used to detect muscle wasting, measure hydration levels and percentage of body fat.
Monday Hot Lunch
Each Monday, outside of the national holidays, Food Outreach invites our clients to join us for a three-course meal, served restaurant-style, in our dining room - keeping with the Food Outreach commitment to serving people living with HIV/AIDS or cancer with dignity. We call this our Monday Hot Lunch, and it provides clients an opportunity to enjoy some delicious meals prepared by Food Outreach’s Chef, often along with guest chefs from around the area. Through our Monday Hot Lunch program, Food Outreach provides both good food and good company, and gives clients the opportunity to socialize and foster friendships.  Periodically, there is a discussion after the lunch about general health topics beneficial to people living with HIV/AIDS or cancer.

Each Monday Hot Lunch can be sponsored by a group or individual for a $300 donation. If you are interested in sponsoring a lunch, please contact Becky Reichardt at 314-652-3663 ext. 117 or becky@foodoutreach.org.

Nutrition Education Series “Breakfast at Food Outreach”
Food Outreach hosts a monthly nutrition education program, which is held on the first Thursday of every month starting at 10 a.m. This program features a healthy breakfast and an informative presentation by an expert in the field. Past topics included: exercise and its relationship to nutrition, reading labels on groceries, and how food can combat certain side effects of current HIV/AIDS medications and cancer treatments. These classes are open to clients’ family members as well.
Cooking Classes
Food Outreach is dedicated to providing clients with the tools they need to maintain a balanced diet while battling their disease.  To help them in their fight, Food Outreach hosts free Cooking Classes for clients in collaboration with Operation Food Search. These classes are designed to introduce clients to new foods, to encourage variety in diets, and to promote self-sufficiency. Participants also learn different ways to prepare foods they are already familiar with and learn how to stretch their food dollars. After the class, clients enjoy the meal they learned to cook and get the ingredients to duplicate the recipes at home.  Family members and caregivers of clients can also participate.
